Every morning for three generations, someone from the DeBenedetti family has made sure the bread dough rises long before the sun does.

The first to get flour on their hands was Mario DeBenedetti I, who began baking hearty Italian bread in 1915 using family recipes he brought over from his homeland. He called his bakery Milano after the Italian city he remembered from his youth.  Demand for his fresh-baked goods grew quickly.

Today, his children and grandchildren carry on the tradition turning out delicious, hearth-baked breads and rolls that are available in grocery stores and restaurants throughout Chicagoland. Milano Bakery Inc’s retail store is adjacent to the bakery offering breads, rolls, cakes, cookies and others sweets made from scratch every day.

The bakery and the retail store continue to thrive under Mario DeBenedetti III and his brother, Darin, who both handle the day-to-day operation insuring quality, consistency and customer satisfaction in the one hundred-plus items created daily.

As the population of Milano Bakery, Inc's service area soared over the years, the bakery faced the challenge of having to increase productivity without sacrificing quality or service. The answer was found in technology.

“Today’s new, state-of-the-art equipment allows mid-size bakeries such as Milano to keep pace with large baking corporations, while remaining true to what made customers prefer our product for generations,” said Mario III. “The end result is high volume with high quality – a crucial combination required to survive in today's competitive bakery business.”

Milano Bakery, Inc’s quality extends beyond the "no preservatives" recipes they are famous for. It can also be found in the company's ability to duplicate any recipe as requested, or create original, signature goods for its wholesale customers.

“One of our strong suits is customer service,” said Mario III. “Almost every new restaurant wants something different, and we can create it for them within 24 to 48 hours. The sky’s the limit on being creative with bread. We can surpass it, but it still has to be profitable for the client.”

Our baking expertise extends well beyond the bread ovens.

With over fifty employees, we deliver fresh, custom-baked goods to a variety of wholesale customers including restaurants, casinos, hospitals, grocery stores, schools, and institutions within a fifty-mile radius. Daily delivery routes begin in Joliet at 3:00 AM, and reach as far as northwest Indiana, Aurora, Matteson, Kankakee, Dwight and Marseilles.

Milano Bakery, Inc is located at 433 South Chicago Street in Joliet, and is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM to 1 PM, Saturday from 6 AM to 12 Noon, and Sunday’s from 7 AM to 11 AM.
